The Timegate PicoRaman uses a picosecond pulsed laser for Raman excitation and a gated single photon avalanche detector (SPAD). Because Raman scattering is near instantaneous whilst fluorescence is a slower (100's of picoseconds) the instrument separates the Raman signal from the fluorescence generating a clean Raman signal and a separate time resolved fluoresence measurement.
